The village children on the 'Swing Common' by Chain Pond on the Saturday nearest to the 1953 Coronation watching a "puppet show" with adults acting out Punch and Judy off the tailgate of a lorry. Each village child got a 6d coin, an orange and a Coronation teaspoon. The number of children in the village was quite small as the London overspill estate starting half way down Copse Road and at the bottom of Hardwick Road was only just being occupied.

Confirmed as 6th June 1953. Can confirm the identity of a few of those pictured IF the person concerned asks on this page!

This was my photo. I was in the same school class as Deborah Woodman's brother Tim and went to birthday parties in their house in Somerset Road. Valerie Pink is in the photo-- still in touch with her, also member of the DeLittle Family whose parents are in this picture; all of Meadvale. Little girl out-front lived in Copse Road.

I remember this event, although not the Punch and Judy. We used to have some photos of races which also took place. I think my Mum is standing in the middle of the front row of adults wearing a light dress and dark cardigan and I think the girl you can partly see sitting in front of her with darkish hair and a light coloured bow is me. I was six and we had moved to Meadvale from Brighton Road Redhill, where my Dad had a greengrocer's shop, the previous year although family had been living there since to 1860s. I can't see my sister who still lives there in a flat looking out over Swing Common.
